Week Fifteen
This past week we edited and finalized our astrophotography photos. When we were taking our photos we had to take a lot so that we can stack them. We also took dark photos so that we can make the sky look super dark and have a nice contrast. When we looked at the photos at school we were amazed, but we learned that someone had changed the file type to jpeg as opposed to camera raw. We didn't check to make sure the setting were correct before we took the photos so we were limited on how much we could edit and change. We did our best, but the quality isn't has good as we would have wished. We had some trouble with the stacking, but we ended up figuring it out. Once we had stacked the photos it created a haze over the photo. Luckily we were able to get some help and make the photo pop. We also started our phase four planning. We were given sheets to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses then see how we could grow through a project. I was having some trouble deciding how I could make a project that takes up the rest of the time. I presented my idea and got some very helpful feedback from my peers and teachers.

Week Fourteen
This past week we went camping at Lake Cuyamaca. We headed up Monday morning and left Wednesday morning. The hope for our trip was to give an opportunity to everyone to take a landscape photo. My group had planned to take photos of the Crescent Nebula. We knew all the information needed to help the telescope find it. We didn't photograph the first night so we knew we needed to make sure everything went smoothly the second night because we wouldn't have another chance after. I'm not completely sure what all went wrong, but we were unable to find the Crescent Nebula. This may have happened because the nebula was too dark, the telescope didn't locate it correctly, we had the wrong information, or something completely different. Either way we were not going to get a photo of Crescent Nebula. Andrew recommend that we just look through and navigate the telescope through the Milky Way Galaxy and see what we can find. My partner ending up finding a really cool looking nebula. We don't know for sure what the nebula is officially called, but we think it is either eagle or lobster nebula. My partner and I were able to take over 30 photos of the nebula using s 20 second exposure. We also learned that we need to take photos with the lens cap on so that we can have a completely dark photo to use as the night sky to get rid of the glow from the stars. This will give it a super nice and dark contrast making the sky seem pitch black. Due to the fact that we were the last group to take photos using that particular telescope we got to help take apart and store the telescope. I learned a lot more than I expected because I was able to see how everything fit together by taking it apart. When we looked at the photos at school we were amazed but we also learned that someone had changed the file type to jpeg as opposed to camera raw. We didn't look before we took the photos so we are now limited on how much we can edit and change. Even though we don't have as much information in the photo we are super happy with how it turned out.
In ten years from now I think I am going to remember the good bonding time I spent with my friends. We were able to begin our time together before we left by planning food, tents, sleeping bags and more. Once we got there we worked together to set up our tent. We got to explore the campsite and different places around the lake. We found this perfect place where we were able to set up all three of our hammocks within the same couple of trees. We had a long time where we were just talking and getting to know each other better. We were in those hammocks for around 4 hours. That night another one of our friends came up and we spent around two hours together just talking some more. We had no idea that when we were taken away from our phones that we would have so much to talk about. After we headed back to our camp we had a lot of fun scary each other. On the second day we laid in our hammocks for almost 5 hours, with a two and a half hour nap. We also played cards until we had no more cards available. We walked about a mile to a store to have some food together. That night we made lots of memories sleeping in the parking lot, taking photos, and finding a "new" nebula.

Week Thirteen
This past week was kinda crazy. In the beginning of the week we had very important visitors coming to visit our school. Everyone was slightly on edge because what they thought of us would determine if we can stay a credited school. I needed to spend time out of class making these visitors cookies in hopes of impressing them. I heard the morning talk from my teachers and the college talk from Chris White then I had to leave. I was only back a little before the end of 4th period because of the visitors. On Tuesday we were able to go to the college fair and learn about a bunch of different colleges. I thought it was super cool because some of the colleges I hadn't heard of were some of my favorites. On Wednesday we researched and planned our hit list for what we want to capture during our camping trip next week. On Thursday and Friday I helped organize car rides there and back, made sure everyone had a permission slip, and tried to gain enough money for the campsites. It was a lot harder than I thought to make sure everyone had at least one friend or more in their car. I give mad props to all teachers who have done that before.

This past week I furthered my knowledge about the color spectrum, how epoxy works and began the book, "Light" by Bruce Watson. On Monday we read the intro to the book and finished our blog posts from the week before. On Tuesday we researched about some of the main developers and key people who pushed our thinking about light. We also learned about how the epoxy worked and did a model with slime. We watched a video on Thursday about light and the color spectrum. In humanities we worked on a writing piece about the question, "How does the work of scientists, artists and philosophers lead to wonder and curiosity?" We had time to write our first draft, get critique and revise during the past week. Looking back it seems as if I keep using the excuse that I don't have a laptop to not work during the time I have. There are plenty of resources in the classroom and other rooms at school for me to do my work. On Friday I was able to use a computer and be pretty productive. I know now to use my resources and get my work done when I am given the time.

Week Eleven
This past week I felt like I was hardly at school. We had Monday off and I was sick on Wednesday. On Tuesday we began looking at the photos we had taken from the weeks before we left for spring break. I spent a lot of my time on Tuesday catching up with friends instead of finishing up some work that I didn't do before the break started. I don't think that I was very productive with my time when I had plenty of time to be productive. On Wednesday the class looked through photos and began to edit them. On Thursday I looked through my photos and tried to edit the one I choose. I was having a lot of technical difficulties. I couldn't decide what looked good even after I adjusted each different tool. I was able to get help from some of my friends to make the photo look even better than I could have imagined. On Friday I unfortunately found out that photos taken on an iPhone won't turn out as well because it isn't as quality of a photo. The photo I choose was taken on an iPhone and I won't be able to use it. I'm planning on going out and trying to take a new photo over the weekend. I was also able to work on my blog post and help Delta Trade Co.

In order to create a beautiful photo it takes many different steps. The very first step is when you take the original photo. You can edit a photo all you want, but if you don't start out with a good photo your finished product can only be so good. Foot to frame ratio is important but not necessarily crucial because you can also edit a photo afterwards. You also need good lighting and a quality camera. A quality camera will help your photo look crisp and professional even if it is expanded or blown up in the future. When it comes to editing a photo there are many different things that come into play. For transforming it into metallic photo paper we had to be careful because the metallic paper changes the colors. Once we printed the photos we put them on a thin piece of wood to act as a supporter. The final step in creating our beautiful photos was to cover it in epoxy. This ended up doing a lot more than I thought it would. The colors became a lot more vibrant and beautiful.
Chemistry-
Light is used throughout our entire project, even the project title is light. Light is the center of everything we do in our project. We look at the light before we take our photos, we adjust the light while editing, and we reflect the light through our metallic paper.
The relationship with light is used throughout the entire photo taking process. When we take our photos we try to use as much natural lighting as possible to accentuate the natural features. The lighting changes a lot when editing a photo. We change the lighting in a photo many different times before we decide on our final photo. When we pour on the epoxy we change how the light affects the photo. The epoxy protects the photos from the heat, fading, fingers, and the elements.
I think that it is important to exhibit our work in a professional setting because that is what we are trying to achieve. If we knew that at the end of all this our work is just going to sit in a closet we wouldn't have much motivation to make our work beautiful. The fact that we know we are going to have to stand by it and present it in a place for a lot of people to see makes us want to show off our best work possible.

Reflection-
This past week I did a few different things. I had planned to go on a field trip to Three Sisters Falls on Monday to take my landscape photo. Unfortunately there was a mix up with the amount of seats in the car and I was unable to go. I was kind of worried that I would not have an opportunity to take a good landscape without going on this field trip. Luckily a few other kids were also concerned and we were able to come together and plan a last minute field trip to sunset cliffs. We rode our bikes through Point Loma and ended up at Point Loma Nazarene University. I was able to take some photos that I think will turn out well. I'm planning on processing them over spring break. Earlier in the week we worked in project groups. My group was able to make some example postcards. I was also able to help other groups with making calendars, organizing field trips, and finding a space to exhibit our photos during the semester.
Project-
Last week we got into groups to help our teacher plan out our project. There were multiple things my group wanted to do, but we didn't know where to start. We researched different places that let us make our own calendars, postcards, and mouse pads. Instead we were able to make our own format and design our own postcards. We were able to print some example postcards with Andrew's printer. They looked really cool, but we want to have a mat finish so that the photo doesn't get scratched in the mail. We now need to compare the prices of making postcards at school or paying to have them done professionally.

This past week I worked on a few different things. In chemistry we did a lab about light and how different materials react to fire. I thought it was super interesting mostly because I didn't know fire could be that many different colors. I also was able to get my personal project approved. Unfortunately we learned that we won't be able to make the smoke bombs colored. This is because we can’t use normal color dye we would need special dye. The dye we would need to use is really expensive and hard to come by. We are currently thinking of new and different ways to color the smoke bombs. In humanities we worked on planning a field trip for next week. We planned a trip to Three Sisters Falls up in Julian. We also worked on writing about a landscape view in a Steinbeck format.

This past week I was not motivated. I had come into the week behind on a blog post and knew I needed to get it done. We were in a new room and I was distracted by learning and playing chess as well as walking on the slackline trainer. I was able to work on my independent proposal and I'm getting excited to explore more independent ideas. I'm hoping for my next personal project I want to spend less time on the proposal and more time doing what I'm interested in. I had to leave early on Wednesday and had half days on Thursday and Friday. Those three days went by really fast, but they felt more productive than the others. I knew I didn't have much school time left and I didn't want to get behind on my blog posts again. I was able to get caught up and finish this week. It seems that I work better when I know a deadline is coming up.

This past week I missed Friday and the last half of Thursday. During the time I missed my class worked on reflecting on previous labs, developing paper, and blog posts. For the time I was at school I did similar things. On Monday we did a lab with H2 balloons in chemistry. In humanities we had a couple mini seminars about what it means to be a good neighbor and if wealthy people have a responsibility to help poorer people. We also talked about the different bodies of water in California and how they have changed and adapted over time to compensate for the amount growing population. I usually work particularly hard on Fridays to tie up loose ends from the week so that I don't have homework over the weekend. Heading into this week I knew that I would be missing Friday. I brushed it off and procrastinated until I was overwhelmed with the work that began to pile up the next week.

This past week I had a lot of free time to work on what I needed to get done in humanities. I knew of the things I needed to get done, but I didn't want to do them. I had finished the things I wanted to do first and felt comfortable with what I had done and rode the coattail of some productivity until the last day. I knew the entire week that I was going to regret procrastinating and that I should do it when I had the given time. I didn't listen to myself and saved everything until Friday. I knew it was go time when I got in on Friday. I sat down and knew that I had plenty to do and that I could do it if I really focused. I was able to get all my work done and motivate those around me to get their work done too. In chemistry I felt behind on coating paper because the rest of my group was more forward and would take the open slot each time. I finally stood up for myself by telling them I needed to get my work done too. I was not able to develop my photo which ended up working out for the better because the developed photos weren't great.

Possible Landscape Photo Trip Plan
I have a couple of different ideas on places I would like to go during the landscape section of our project. One of them would to go down to the beach. This is a simple field trip, but I don't want to overlook the beautiful setting we are so close to. My other idea is to go to Joshua Tree. I have never been before, but by looking at photos it seems to offer a wide variety of landscape photography options. For this trip I think the fewer the students the better because we don't want everyone in the class to have the same set of photos. We would probably drive up in the late morning and stay overnight so that we can get sunrise and sunset photos as well as having time to take photos during the day.
Chemistry-
We started off the photo development process a few weeks ago by creating emulation. To create the emulation we combined silver nitrate and sodium chloride to create silver chloride and sodium nitrate. The atoms combine by sharing electrons that are negatively charges. The chloride ion wants the electron from the silver ion. Once these share electrons they have created a bond. Now the chloride is negatively charged because the electrons are negatively charged. So when atoms bond they have more negative than positive. Because the silver ion gave away an electron it is now positively charged. This bond has created a crystal. When we expose the photo and emulation to the light, the light breaks the bond between the two. This frees up the silver ion from the chloride ion. The developer adds back the lost electron to the silver ion making it natural again. The neutral silver is also metallic, which natural color is black. The stop bath then stops the reaction and prevents it from further developing. The stop bath stops it by taking away the leftover electrons that came from the developer bath. Then we wash away excess chemicals on the paper.
For the rest of the project I still have a couple questions. One of them being, how are we going to use chemistry to present our future photos? The other question is, what will be our final chemistry product that we are going to exhibit at exhibition?

The developer adds back the lost electron to the silver ion making it natural again. The neutral silver is also metallic, which natural color is black. The stop bath then stops the reaction and prevents it from further developing. The stop bath stops it by taking away the leftover electrons that came from the developer bath. Then we wash away excess chemicals on the paper.
For the rest of the project I still have a couple questions. One of them being, how are we going to use chemistry to present our future photos? The other question is, what will be our final chemistry product that we are going to exhibit at exhibition?
Dorothea Lange's Photo-
Week Five
Reflection-
This past week I read, reflected, and too photos. We read a lot of the book, "Of Mice and Men." I didn't read that much of it in class because I knew I would want to read it in one sitting. I was able to read a good chunk of the book and learn about the characters. I am finally starting to remember who is who. On Tuesday we went to Balboa Park to take photos of human subjects and to explore the Museum of Photographic Arts. I stuck with the same couple of people throughout the day and we were able to get photos of many different types of people. I was happy with some of the photos I got, but I wish I could've taken a photo that wowed me.The rest of the week I worked on my Dorothea Lange writing and edited the photo I took at Balboa.

Of Mice and Men
This week we read a large section of the book. Lennie and George started to settle into their new home. We got to know a lot more about the cast and how they act in different situations. I was curious about the African American stable boy and was happy when we got to learn more about him. It said that he reads a lot and I could tell that his language was more sophisticated than the others. The way John Steinbeck wrote his dialogue was with better grammar than the other characters.

Week Four
Reflection-
This past week I worked on photo paper, photoshop editing, reading, "Of Mice and Men", and creating drafts of Dorothea Lange photos. In chemistry we set up dark room to coat papers. I never knew how much work it took to make one photo. We were only able to make 9 pieces of paper for our entire class in a little over one hour. In humanities we read, "Of Mice and Men." I am having trouble remembering which character is which. I get confused between Lennie and George. We also talked about the meaning of drowning the puppies. A lot of the week was spent on creating our 1,000 word piece about a photo taken by Dorothea Lange. I was able to get critique from a few classmates, but not yet from Mike.

Human Photo Plan
I plan on going to Balboa Park, on Tuesday, to take photos of people who are isolated from others. I am looking for those who are not necessarily alone, but those who are in groups and still feel alone. I'm hoping that my photo will show people the value of friendships and knowing people who see you.
Chemistry-
I first cropped the photo to position her right eye in the upper left third. I then turned the photo black and white. I played around with the different tools adjusting the different colors and brightness. To finish it off I adjusted the contrast to make sure that the features I wanted popped.

Week Three
Reflection-
This past week I was sick the first few days and missed the start of our first benchmark. The rest of the class looked through photos from Dorothea Lange who was a photographer during the Great Depression. While I was out I checked google classroom a couple different times, but didn't see any new tasks I could do. I should have contacted one of my classmates to figure out what we did so I wouldn't be as behind. Unfortunately I didn't and felt slightly overwhelmed when I came back. Luckily I had used my time in class wisely and didn't need to do too much for homework. On Wednesday we learned about composition in photos and got to experiment by trying it out ourselves. We also set up the dark room to get ready for our upcoming experiments. On Thursday we started the book, "Of Mice and Men" and continued work on our first benchmark. In chemistry on Thursday we created emulsion to begin work on our photos. On Friday we looked through our portraits and I was able to take some portrait photos.

Benchmark One First Drafts-
"Of Mice and Men" Chapter One
In the first chapter it started out with a nature setting. As we read the first few paragraphs described how over time the same spot in nature changed and adapted to animals then humans. We learned about how Steinbeck wasn't a religious man, but how he used biblical allusion with the sycamore tree. We were introduced to the two main characters Lennie and George. George and From the brief amount I have read about them and all I have heard I am excited to learn more and experience their world with them.
Chemistry-
How and why did we set up the dark room? What was your role?
I was gone when the majority of the set up for the dark room took place. When I came back my team had strung up soft lights in Trader Joe bags and had a few extra bags to use if we needed to take light to one specific area. They had also covered the door window with tin foil and painters tape. I joined the group who creates something to cover the door when people walk in and out. We tried to hang a curtain, but because of the amount of positive air in the Chemistry room it would blow the curtain and let light in. We planned to make a "mini room" that would let people in without letting in the light. We haven't made the curtain room yet, but hopefully next week.
Describe the apparatus for photo emulsion and how it lets us do our work.
We created the dark room because we are going to make photo paper. On Thursday we created emulsion for the first time. We used hot plate to heat a water bath. In the water bath we suspended a beaker. We mixed together sodium chloride in gelatin, salt, and water until there were no more clumps. Then we added silver nitrate. We stirred it for 30 seconds and let it rest for 4-5 minutes. We repeated this step 3-4 times. We are currently let it sit in light proof containers until we are ready to paint it onto our paper. The most challenging part of this process was during the majority of it in the dark. We needed to the experiment in the dark because if the emulsion is exposed to light it would ruin it.
Week Two
Reflection-
This past week we mostly focused on portraits and facial reconstruction through lighting. On Monday we worked on taking portraits with natural lighting. Unfortunately it was a very cloudy day and we mostly had white lighting from the clouds. On Tuesday we built soft lighting and learned how to create the ideal dark room. On Wednesday we learned about how to find the "good side" of different types of faces and got to experiment through taking photos of our classmates. Thursday was a crazy day with many unexpected events. Some of the team was able to take head shots with the guidance of Andrew. On Friday we talked about the current events taking place in America. We also talked about the New Colossus and the Statue of Liberty. We designed t-shirts related to, "The New Colossus" poem.

What do the following equations teach you about Chemistry?
1. AgNO3 + NaCl = NaNO3 + AgCL
2. AB + CD = CB + AD
A= Ag = Silver
B= NO3 = Nitrate
C= Na = Sodium
D = CL = Chlorine
This teaches me that I may be in over my head throughout this semester. I do not understand all that this means. I can assume that when mixing together the elements on one side of the equation it will create what is on the other side. I do remember in 8th grade learning how to add and subtract with scientific formulas, but I don't fully remember how to do that.

Week One
Reflection-
My first week of school was all but simple. I had started out the week on a team where I was forced to take Spanish again. I was unhappy and wanted to pursue a form of science. I was able to switch and begin my new classes a few days late. Heading into my new class I was worried that I wouldn't know anyone and feel like everyone had already made friends from the past couple of days. I walked in and saw one of my good friends from last year. I was very happy because I had wanted to be in a class with her again and knew she has experience with photography. Right when we started class I could tell I was going to enjoy this semester. We jumped right into photography and different forms of science. I had missed a few lessons about how to take a good photo using the rule of thirds, the project overview, and a few outings. On the outings I missed, students were able to go out and take photos using what they just learned. I was bummed to hear that I missed taking photos and playing with light, but I am excited to do more as the semester moves on.
Humanities-
On September 4th, 1957 nine brave African American students, ranging in age headed into a previously all white school followed by Caucasian men and women screaming racial slurs and shouting unthinkable things. In this photo strong Elizabeth Eckford walks through outraged crowds while being protected by soldiers put there in order to make sure no physical harm will come to her. She is one of the first children to learn and in an integrated school.
Elizabeth must have had to know what was in her way when she said she would go to a previously all white school. She and her family knew what they were about to face. They knew people would disagree and would go to extreme lengths to prove their points. They accepted these things in order to move forward and bring on development and progress.
While she blocked out everything being said, those on the other side of the story wanted to be heard. They said these things hoping to break or turn Elizabeth’s way of thinking. They hoped to keep things the way they had been for a long time. They were afraid of change and feared the new ways of thinking.
Chemistry-
This week we learned about the safety procedures to do in a lab. It is very important that during a lab to be in control of the situation. During this upcoming semester we plan on using chemicals that could become dangerous if used in the wrong way. Even if we aren't using deadly chemicals it is still good to know proper procedure. My group made a poster on the importance of alerting the room if something spilled.
